Plastic Cloud  2009

Dimensions: 5' x 7'

Materials: Plastic Craft Mesh, Steel Cable, Aluminum Channel

As an element of the Design Studio renovation, this ceiling treatment provides a unique surface that diffuses light, adds sculptural interest, and hides a cacophony of mechanical equipment above.

The ceiling is created from interweaving a module derived from a simple curved sheet of plastic craft mesh that I have previously explored in other works here and here. The resulting scoop forms are strung together on steel cables and held in tension by two metal tracks.

Detaching one of the tracks allows the flexible surface to peel down to serve as an access panel to lighting and mechanical equipment above.
