Within this urban Seattle residence, the client desired “just enough” separation between the kitchen and living spaces while still maintaining an open feel to an otherwise cramped dwelling.

Three threaded rods form an armature defining the extent of the piece. A single strand of cotton twine (approx. 650ft long) follows the continuous spiral thread of the rods. Tautly wound, the string’s parallel banding creates a flat surface dividing the two spaces. The transparency of the screen varies in intensity depending upon the amount of light on either side. This dialogue allows each material to take on characteristics of the other. Tension straightens the soft malleable string, while its cotton wrap softens the sharp defined edges of the rods.
